GulfSea BD Sterntube Oils
A Marine Biodegradable Sterntube Oil especially formulated for sterntubes ａnd stabilisers operating in sensitive
marine environments
Product Description
GulfSea BD Sterntube Oils are a range of environmentally sensitive lubricants, formulated from natural and
renewable esters, which provide excellent lubrication in both neat ａnd emulsion forms. They are primarily
designed for use where lip type seals ａnd other circulatory oil feed systems are in operation.
GulfSea BD Sterntube Oils ａnd their components are biodegradable according to OECD test 301B ａnd can be
considered minimally toxic according to OECD tests 201/202/203/ ａnd as such meet the VGP definition of an
Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant.

GulfSea BD Sterntube Oils are VGP compliant Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants.
They provide excellent lubrication under both boundary ａnd hydrodynamic lubricating conditions.
GulfSea BD Sterntube Oils forms a stable emulsion with any water that may enter the sterntube
ensuring that a lubricating film is available at start time ａnd corrosion protection is maintained during
prolonged standing.
The product provides excellent lubrication in both neat ａnd emulsion form.
Compatible with most engine oils ａnd the metals commonly used in sterntubes. GulfSea BD Sterntube
Oils can thus be added to the existing oil in use by a topping-up procedure. However a complete oil
change whilst the vessel is in drydock is the preferred method of changeover.
There is good compatibility with the seal materials commonly in use ａnd GulfSea BD Sterntube Oils
are approved by most major lip ａnd face stern seal manufacturers. (Please contact Gulf Oil Marine to
check the specific approvals.)
Applications
GulfSea BD Sterntube Oil ISO 100 is the viscosity grade normally recommended by the bearing ａnd seal
manufacturers for regular running in the sterntube, where there is potential for sea or fresh water contamination
into the lubrication system. The ISO 68 grade is recommended for some sterntube systems ａnd stabilisers.
An ISO 220 grade can be made available. It is primarily recommended for use where vessels require emergency
assistance in reducing the leakage past a damaged or worn aft seal. It is fully compatible with the other sterntube
grades ａnd is very effective in reducing leakage rates.
