generic ascii ethernet
mvi69-gec
the inrax generic ascii ethernet communications module (mvi69-gec) is designed to allow compactlogix processors to easily interface with ascii devices using the tcp/ip protocol and the processor. compatible devices may be either ascii instruments with ethernet built-in or ethernet connection via a thin server to the existing ascii device.
features and benefits
five servers and clients are present on the module permitting both the reception and transmission of data between the allen-bradley processor and attached devices.
the mvi69-gec module is a powerful communication interface for compactlogix platform processors. developed under license from rockwell automation, the module incorporates proprietary backplane technology that enables powerful data access between the module and the compactlogix processor.
general specifications - mvi69 modules
general specifications common to all modules in the mvi69 family include:
- single slot ? compactlogix backplane compatible
- the module is configured using the generic profile in the rslogix programming software
- supported compactlogix processors: l20/l30/l35
- the micrologix 1500 controller with lrp firmware version 6.0 or better is supported by the module
- module setup via a simple configuration text file downloaded via configuration/debug port
- configuration data is stored in the module?s non-volatile memory
- 62 (fixed) word input/output data transfer lengths. 60 words of data per block
- multiple modules can be placed in the same rack ? up to the limits of the power supply and backplane data transfer
- local and extended rack ? the module will function in both the local and the extended rack configurations
- high speed data transfer across the backplane provides quick data up-date times.
ladder logic requirements
ladder logic in the compactlogix is used to control the transfer of data between the mvi69 module and the processor. using a block numbering and a data-paging scheme, memory transfer speed and usage in the module is optimized. in addition to data transfer, the mvi69 module can be optionally controlled from the ladder logic (example: coldboot, warmboot, command control, and others).
product applications
the use of the tcp/ip protocol with ethernet at the device level on the plant floor is becoming widespread in many industry segments. using the mvi69-gec, the advantage of ethernet speed is realized while allowing greater distances between networked devices.
- bar code scanners
- weigh scale interfaces
- legacy ascii protocol connections
- terminal port emulation
- printer driver (alarm/status printer)

configuration/debug port functionality
the configuration/debug serial port is used to connect to a pc for configuration, status monitoring, and troubleshooting (6-foot serial cable included with product shipment). after editing on a pc, a text configuration file is downloaded and stored in the module.once operational, the debug port allows access to detailed protocol and module status data.
