性质描述: 白色至绿黄色针状或柱状结晶。熔点148-149℃。溶于甲醇、乙醇、苯、乙酸及50%醇水混合液。干燥结晶性质稳定，但其溶液甚至在遮光下也能分解氧化。该品溶液遇三氯化铁呈红色。

用途: 5,5-二甲基-1,3-环己二酮可以与醛类形成不溶性的缩合物，而且与不同的醛生成的缩合物熔点不同，与酮类则没有这个性质。这个性质可用于醛类的鉴定，因此醛试剂可用来分离或检验醛类。它还可用作呱啶的催化剂和色层分析试用剂。
