The cryogenic homogenization system simplifies the grinding of plant ａnd animal tissue at cryogenic temperatures. This system combines a drive motor with mortars ａnd pestles chilled in a liquid nitrogen reservoir. The use of multiple mortars ａnd pestles allows for higher grinding throughput. The motorized unit speed is slower than a typical homogenizer to prevent sample splattering ａnd generation of airborne particles. Mortars ａnd pestles are constructed of durable porcelain/zirconium composite. The rugged pestle has a stainless steel shaft with a hex bit for quick connection to the motor. Mortars ａnd pestles can be decontaminated by autoclaving, dry heat, or exposure to a commercial decontaminating solution. For sample processing, the 2mL capacity mortars are placed in the liquid nitrogen reservoir. Tissue samples are added to the pestles ａnd allowed to freeze. The pestle is raised ａnd lowered to mechanically grind the sample to a fine powder. Mortars can be held in the liquid nitrogen reservoir to prevent sample melting. All components can be easily disassembled for cleaning ａnd decontamination.
