MPEG-SG is a unique and highly valuable polymer. It cleverly combines two main parts, each playing a crucial role in its overall nature.
Firstly, methoxy polyethylene glycol (mPEG) is the core component of this polymer. MPEG is known for its unique linear structure, which gives it good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. More specifically, a large number of oxygen atoms are distributed on the molecular chains of mPEG, which provide a crucial contribution to the water solubility of the polymer.
However, only mPEG is not sufficient to construct all the characteristics of mPEG SG. Therefore, sodium trimethylene sulfonate (SG) was introduced as another key component. SG is a polymer with a linear structure, whose molecular chains are tightly connected by covalent bonds with sodium trimethylene sulfonate monomers. The sulfonyl groups in these monomers provide hydrophobic properties for SG.
When mPEG meets SG, the chemical reaction between them is subtle and complex. Specifically, a covalent bond is formed between the oxygen atom of mPEG and the sulfonyl group of SG. The formation of this bond not only connects the two components together, but also endows mPEG-SG with unique properties of both hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. Importantly, this connection method also ensures that mPEG-SG has excellent solubility and stability in water.
